What will
be our reaction by seeing tons of garbage located in the street? A corrupt
government, a lazy municipality and a kam chor labor force! Did we ever think
where it comes from, who is responsible for this? Yes, we are. The garbage that
comes from our home, our office, restaurant, colleges is ultimately dumped into
the street and remained uncollected for several weeks, sometimes for the month.
The garbage scattered in the city gives a stinky smell affecting our health and
daily activities.
The
developing country like Nepal is facing a waste management problem. Due to the
lack of planning, long term vision and lack of awareness everyday waste is
increasingly dumped in the street.
My Garbage
My Responsibility is social enterprise established in 2018 with an objective to
manage garbage that comes from private offices, restaurant, schools, households
etc. There are tons of garbage coming from the offices and household reaches at
city with a hope Municipality will collect and dump in the dumping site, 24 km
away from the city. Due to the poor management system of government, it cannot
be collected for a week. Sometimes due to the strike of labor force, sometimes
due to the unavailability of dumping site. Ultimately who are suffering, people
who is producing wastage, people who is paying tax. Thus we are here to manage garbage
of your office and home.

Statement of problem
A piled string garbage around a major city of Kathmandu
valley poses a serious health risk for pedestrians, affects surrounding
environment, causing difficulties in traffic management and communicating
negative message among the tourists about this heritage city. According to the government record
80 % wastage are solid organic wastes that comes from the restaurant,
households which is dumped in to the side of the street. Government is more
focusing on temporary solution rather than minimizing and recycling that
garbage for better. They are busy on searching dumping site to dump around 70
metric tons daily. Sisdole, Syuchatar, Gokarna, Bagmati river side are some
dumping site currently government is using and trying to explore more. What
happening to the local people, surrounding natural environments? They are being
polluted due to the mismanagement of the site. The scenario is worst during the
monsoon where garbage is not taken care up by government for weeks, sometimes
for month. The problem is government see garbage as a politics and due to the
negligence of governing body our health is in risk.
Pain
point: it poses
serious health risk like respiration problems, diarrhea, dysentery …. of the
people and destroying natural environment impacting image of the city.
Relevance: My garbage my responsibility
collected garbage from the source. Before thrown into the street, garbage will be
collected and managed to produce compost.
A training about 3 R’s will help to minimize the garbage, help client to
know about recycle opportunity which reduce garbage and save their expenses.
Propose
solution:
In order to train about 3 R’s, a trainer will provide workshop
for the community. In this training,
trainer will discuss about disadvantage and health hazard via garbage around
the city and they will discuss about recycling. A process to prepare compost at
a home/office will be shown which can be used in garden and in the flower. We
provide onsite waste management services to hotel, hospital, colleges. Trainer
will show demo to reuse plastic bottles at home. Trainer
will perform various experimentation to the client. The community people will
be trained and encouraged to produce different creative products by using non-degradable
garbage like bottle, plastics and other electronic garbage. To promote plastic
free community, enterprises collaborate with Bhaini and we will distribute and
encourage them to use plastic free bags for shopping. Made from other material
not from the plastic and encourage them to use while going from shopping.
All the community people will be trained to handle the garbage
properly and requested to store in the right container. They will be informed
to store decomposable garbage and non-decomposable garbage in different
container.
To improve the waste management practice at the private
institute and households we provide training and infrastructure to improve
garbage management at the source level.
My Garbage My Responsibility works with colleges, corporate
houses, restaurants, hotels and banquets, vegetables markets like Balkhu and
Kalimati Markets, community. We use membership card for them. We do initial
observation to identify garbage produced by the clients and based on that we provide
them big or small two containers. One container with green color to
decomposition organic garbage and other red color container for plastic bottle
and other non-degradable garbage. Our staff will collect those container as per
pre-schedule and get them to the factory. All the organic garbage will be
monitored closely to remove any non-decomposable material and process to make
compost. Other non-decomposable material will be segregated as per their type.
We make plan about what we do for each materials.
For plastic
bottles: collected
bottles can be used as a decorating material, as a pot to grow flowers. A trained employee will make plastic flowers,
doll, as a decorative box to store. In order to recycle excessive bottles, we
collaborate with plastic recycler vendor.
For plastic bag: The collected plastic bags will be
used to produce different placemats, artificial flowers, bowls, coasters and
different creative things. All the collected plastic will be washed by the
machine in warm water for decontamination. Then a trained employee will cut
down into the strip of plastic and uses to make different material. It can be
sold to the market at the good price.

To collect the garbage, a truck will be used. A truck
storage area will be divided into two partition: one for non-decomposable and
one for decomposable garbage. Different colors of truck will be used as per
area they should covered. For the area like supermarket, big restaurant, banquet
hall and vegetables market daily pickup facility will be provided and for the small
colleges, hotel and restaurant every alternative day. Based on how much garbage
they produce; schedule is prepared for collection.
To make further smooth timely collection of garbage, website
of companies will be created and each member will have one credentials. Through
login in the system, they can inform us to collect garbage from their place. A
simple sms alert message from member will be send to pick up employees. Garbage
will be collected within 2 hours. In the website all the members can see all
the record sheet like number of garbage collected, approximately ton collected,
approximately non-decomposable garage collected, ton of compost produced by the
companies etc.
The
decomposable site will be located around 5 km far from the city.

customer served, ton of wastage collected, ton of non-disposable garbage sold
to third party, number of employment generated and number of collaboration
indicates growth of the organization.
In future
a stationary and decorating product, board, pencil can be created from
recycling garbage there is ample opportunity to create new product by utilizing
non-decomposable wastage.
